Text: Stellar-mass black hole discovered
Our astronomers have detected a stellar-mass black hole in another galaxy, much further away than any other previously known. With a mass of about twenty times that of the sun, this is the second most massive black hole of this type ever discovered.

Theme: Creating sustainable wildlife tourism through Student Enterprise

Text: Enterprising students make global impact
University student entrepreneur Sam Williams scooped the top prize in our annual competition with his Eco-Tourism Bonaire idea. His business will employ local people to take tourists on memorable wildlife tours of the Caribbean island to see endangered species such as flamingos, parrots and turtles. Entries for the 2010 competition open in February.

Our Centres for Doctoral Training offer a completely different kind of PhD study. Students in the centres will be part of crack interdisciplinary teams from around the world, working on real-life problems, preparing them for hands-on careers. The centres cover Energy Research, Water, Nuclear Fission and Engineering, Advance Metallic Systems and Regenerative Medicine.

Text: University backs Sheffield's bid to be a 2018 World Cup city
The University of Sheffield is getting behind Sheffield's bid to become a host city for the 2018 World Cup. Professor Keith Burnett (Vice-Chancellor) and Paul Tobin (President of Sheffield University's Students' Union) recently teamed up to show their support. Sheffield's Back the Bid day is taking place on Friday 16 October when people and businesses in the city are being encouraged to creatively demonstrate their support for the bid.

Text: Improving the lives of cancer patients
Our researchers have used a new technique to help reconstruct the voice of a patient who had an operation to remove her vocal cords after developing cancer. They used statistical modelling and recordings of the patient taken prior to the operation to synthesize a realistic-sounding voice.
