Internet TV & Phone

We have two services available to resident students; IP Television and IP Telephony.

IP Telephony

IP Telephony allows students to use their computer to make and receive telephone calls. Calls between two people on this service are free. One of the big benefits to students is that the service is not limited to the University, their family and friends can use the service on their home PCs, which means free calls home! This service also works internationally.

Calls to telephones not on the service are usually cheaper than using standard telephone lines or mobiles.

This is a similar service to Skype.

This service is available in all university accommodation.

IP Television (IPTV)

IPTV allows students to watch television over the internet on their computers. The system works in a similar way to any cable, satellite or digital TV services, except the TV channels are displayed on a computer. As well as television channels the service includes a number of Radio stations too. With this service there are around 25 channels that students can receive for free, and 25 premium channels they can subscribe to.

Students can still use other applications on the PC while watching TV or listening to the radio. Alternatively they can switch to full screen mode, sit back and enjoy!

Some of the channels available for free include all BBC TV stations, ITV1, Channel 4, More 4, Film 4, E4, Five, Five US, TMF and The Hits. As well as UK channels there are a number of foreign language channels (PCNE, Al Jazeera, TV5 and others).

Some of the subscription channels include Living TV, Bravo, Paramount Comedy, FX, National Geographic.

IPTV is available in all of the newly built student accommodation in Endcliffe Village as well as Stephenson (including Carrysbrook Court), Halifax, Jonas Court, Crewe, Endcliffe Vale and Crescent Flats.
