What is a 'returner'?
A returner is any student who isn’t a first year. It doesn’t matter whether:
- You’re currently living in University accommodation and want to stay.
- You lived in University accommodation in your first year and have been living in private housing until now.
- You’ve never lived in University accommodation – you can still live with us.
When can I apply for accommodation for 2013/14?
What happens after I’ve applied?
- We’ll be in touch by email to let you know we’ve received your application.
- We’ll then offer you your property or room – once you’ve returned the ‘reservation slip’ accepting this offer, the property/room is yours and will not be offered to anyone else.
- We’ll email you in March with a link to your contract which you’ll need to accept by the closing date specified.

Can I arrange to view properties?
I already live in University accommodation and like where I am - can I have the same room next year?
| Specific accommodation is set aside for returning students, taking into consideration a quieter environment and sharing with like minded students. If you’d like to stay in your current room you can do so, but it can't be guaranteed and you may be sharing with first year students. If you’re applying as a group and can fill all the bedrooms in the apartment, you can stay where you are. |
I'm looking for accommodation with friends, can we apply as a group?
| Yes, we welcome applications from groups. You just need to make sure that each member of the group submits an application and provides details of all others in the group that you want to share with on there. |
What happens if one of the group pulls out?
If you reserve a property as a group, then the rest of the group will not be liable for the extra rent if one of you pulls out. This is because we offer individual Residence Contracts and not group contracts. However, the University may allocate the empty room to another student if applicable.
I haven't found anyone I want to live with - can I apply on my own?
| Yes, you can apply as an individual and we will endeavour to place you with other returning students if that’s what you’d prefer. |
How much is the rent?
| Rents are available to view here and include all utility bills. Rent for returning single students will not increase for 2013 as the rents from 2012 have been held. |
How long are the contracts?
| The majority of contracts in apartments are for 42 weeks. 51 week contracts are available in some properties depending on availability. Laddow studios are on 51 week contracts. Your individual Residence Contract will provide you with full details of your exact contract dates. |
Are bills included in the rent?
| Yes, all water, gas, electricity and internet bills are included in your rent so you'll never have to worry about bills. The exception to this is in the houses on Glossop Road. |
I currently live in University accommodation - does my deposit roll over?
| Your current deposit will not roll over and you will be required to pay another deposit to secure the accommodation when your contract is allocated from March 2013 onwards. |
I don’t want to live with first years, do I have to?
| We have a variety of properties available for returning students. Some of our houses are reserved just for returners and we have designated apartments too. |
Do I have to apply for accommodation if I am a Residential Mentor?
| No, if you'll be living in University accommodation as a Residential Mentor, your manager will allocate you accommodation depending on which area you are responsible for. |
I applied for accommodation but I have now been offered a job as a Residential Mentor – what do I need to do?
Can I store belongings in the property through the summer?
| No, unfortunately you cannot store your belongings in your room or property through the summer unless you have a summer contract. |
