Rewarding excellence at the Finance and Commercial Awards Evening
The Annual Awards Evening held on 1 March, celebrated the achievements of staff in training, long service, exemplary attendance and also revealed the winners of the ACS People´s Awards.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Keith Burnett, attended the ceremony and gave out awards to deserving staff from the departments of Accommodation and Commercial Services and Finance.
The winners of the ACS People´s Awards were revealed on the evening, recognising staff who go the extra mile to help customers and colleagues:
Exceptional Customer Service – Information Commons Cafe
Inspirational Colleague – Lesley Humar (Resident Support)
Services to the Student Community – Richard Bruce (Resident Support)
Exceptional Partnership Working – Commercial Services Retail team and Juice team
We’ve won an award for Best Student Housing!
We’re thrilled to announce that we won the award for Best Student Housing at the inaugural College and University Business Officers’ (CUBO) awards in Edinburgh on 20 June, beating off tough competition from the University of Edinburgh and Northumbria University.
The awards were introduced by CUBO to recognise excellence in the student living experience. A panel, including former NUS president Aaron Porter, drew up a shortlist for each award with the winner being chosen by colleagues in the sector. We were the only university to be shortlisted for two awards and were also shortlisted for the Innovation Award for Excellence in Student Experience for our successful Communities project.
Former Scottish rugby captain, Gavin Hastings OBE, presented the award to Pat McGrath (Director of ACS), Ian Jones (Head of Accommodation Services) and Jacqui Cameron (Head of Marketing and Communications) at the ceremony which was held at the Playfair Library Hall in Edinburgh.
Pat said, “We’re really proud to be awarded Best Student Housing at the CUBO awards. The award recognises both our high quality accommodation and all the services and facilities that we provide to students living in University accommodation which make it the best in the UK!”
The high standard of our accommodation has been consistently recognised by both students and our peers – we were voted joint top in the UK in the 2011 Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, saw high levels of satisfaction in the International Student Barometer and Student Barometer Surveys and in our own Residents Survey.

- Exceptional Customer Service – The Home for Christmas team
- Inspirational Colleague – Donna Ramsden (Portering)
- Services to the Student Community – Ryan Jinn (Resident Support)
- Exceptional Partnership Working – Commercial Services Chefs and Sheffield City College
There was also a surprise Special Achievement Award for Linda Danson (propertywithUS).
