All third year MEng students built a micro air vehicle (MAV) for their group design project. MAVs are tiny, unpiloted aircraft less than 15cm in length, width or height that can explore hazardous environments and carry out covert spy missions where humans can't go.
Students work in multi-disciplinary teams to design, develop, build and test micro air vehicles. They are given a project briefing and encouraged to develop novel solutions that develop their creativity in applying engineering to solve a challenging problem. In addition to applying and developing their technical skills, students develop a number of wider skills that are valuable for industry. The finale of the project is a flying day where they demonstrate various aspects of their final designs.
The project is generously supported financially by Boeing and also members of our industrial advisory board who are involved in marking various aspects of the project and providing valuable feedback and guidance from an industrial perspective.
