Accreditation and Professional Institutions
In common with all other UK university engineering departments which wish to provide accredited courses, we aim to satisfy the requirements of the Engineering Council (UK) new standard (UK-Spec) for professional Engineers, as specified by the four professional institutions which accredit our course:
The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS)
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3)
To meet the educational requirements for ultimately becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng), you will need to complete either an accredited 4 year MEng degree course, or, alternatively, an accredited 3 year BEng (Hons) degree. With a BEng (Hons) degree, however, you must also complete a further one year of study at a later stage in your career, called a ‘Matching Section’, which the professional institutions will accept as being an MEng equivalent.
The IET stipulates that all students studying at CEng level, entering IET accredited programmes, will be required to pass their degree at 2.II level or above in order to graduate with an accredited programme.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Please note that if a student fails to fulfil certain elements of the degree programme, such as Engineering Applications in year 1 and the Flight Laboratory Course in year 3, they may only be awarded a non-accredited degree.
