The University of Sheffield
Aerospace Engineering

Postgraduate Degrees

The Faculty of Engineering offers a number of opportunities for postgraduate taught and research study in aerospace and related subjects.

The following MSc programmes are currently offered:

MSc in Control Systems (full-time)

Contact: Professor M Balikhin, Postgraduate Admissions Tutor, Automatic Control and Systems Engineering

Email : m.balikhin@sheffield.ac.uk

Control systems is a multidisciplinary subject and attracts graduates from many scientific disciplines. We will provide you with the broad analytical and practical skills and experience to apply control and systems concepts in a variety of professional environments. Individual modules are taught in blocks and can also be taken as Short Courses as part of the Continuing Professional Development Programme, or as part of the MSc in Control and Systems Engineering.

MSc (Eng)/PG Dip in Aerospace Materials (full or part-time)

Contact: Dr Iain Todd, Aerospace Materials MSc coordinator, Engineering Materials

Email : i.todd@sheffield.ac.uk

This course provides knowledge of the manufacturing, processing and properties of a wide variety of metals and composite materials for potential use in airframes and aeroengines; ranging from processing, through characterisation, microstructure and properties, to behaviour and applications. It will provide you with specialist knowledge, understanding and expertise in a selection of areas of particular relevance, such as the design and applications of materials for airframes and aeroengines.

MSc(Res) Aerodynamics and Aerostructures (full-time)

Contact: Dr Jem Rongong, Postgraduate Admissions Tutor, Department of Mechanical Engineering

Email : j.a.rongong@sheffield.ac.uk

This course involves the study of aerospace systems and structures. Subject areas include aerodynamics and aeropropulsion, fatigue and fracture of aerospace components, composites for aerospace applications and structural health monitoring of aerospace structures.

MSc in Avionic Systems (full time or part-time)

Contact: Dr Kais Atallah, Postgraduate Admissions Tutor,
Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Email : k.atallah@sheffield.ac.uk

Modern avionics have been a catalyst to the significant growth in aviation, by facilitating safe and efficient high volume air transport. Advancements in modern Avionics have principally been the result of the significant developments in Electronic, Electrical, Control and Software engineering. Furthermore, the acceptance, by the aerospace industry, of the more-electric aircraft as more efficient and cost-effective alternative, will undoubtedly boost the impact of avionics on aviation.

Various opportunities for research study towards a PhD or MPhil are also available. Please consult the webpages of the appropriate department and the research centres for more information.

MSc (Res) Advanced Manufacturing Technologies

Contact: Dr Jem Rongong, Postgraduate Admissions Tutor, Department of Mechanical Engineering

Email : j.a.rongong@sheffield.ac.uk

The research project is proposed and mentored by one of AMRC's industrial sponsors. These include The Boeing Company, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Messier Dowty, Sandvik Coromant and Renishaw, and span across the entire manufacturing process, from materials suppliers to assembly specialists. Research projects will focus on a topic that is a current challenge to one of those companies, and students will be asked to investigate potential solutions using some of the most advanced machine tools in the world.
