MEng Aerospace Engineering

This four-year course is designed to produce aerospace engineers with a broad knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of aerospace engineering, whilst at the same time providing the opportunity for students to study a specialised area of their choice in depth.

The MEng and BEng in Aerospace Engineering are identical in year 1, when you will receive a broad introduction to the relevant engineering fundamentals and the basics of aerospace engineering. We show you how these disciplines combine in the design, manufacture and performance of modern aerospace vehicles, structures and systems.

In year 2, you will continue the broad range of topics followed in year 1, but will begin to specialise, following one of two electives:

either Aeromechanics
or Aerospace Systems

In year 3 you will study Aero Propulsion, Aerodymanic Design, Aircraft Dymanics and Control, and Engineering Management,as well as undertaking an exciting Group Design Project where you will work in competing teams to design, build and fly an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). At this stage you will specialise further, selecting from one of the four streams available in the elective you followed in year 2:

In year 3, you will also gain experience of flight instrumentation by attending a flight test course conducted by staff from Cranfield University. This involves flight exercises aboard a Jetstream aircraft and briefing sessions on flight mechanics.

In year 4, you will study Computational Aerodynamics, as well as Engineering Management, Technology Strategy and Business Planning, and will deepen your knowledge and understanding of the specialist area you chose to follow in year 3. You will also undertake a major Individual Investigative Project, under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. Many of these projects are directly linked to, and sponsored by, our industrial partners.

The MEng course is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Institution of Mechanical Engineering, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (formerly the Institution of Electrical Engineering) and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. The accreditation by these institutions allows our graduates to proceed to a Chartered Engineer qualification after suitable experience.

In addition to the Flight Instrumentation Course in year 3, there are further opportunities to learn how to fly through the University's links with Sheffield Aero Club and also with the Yorkshire Universities Air Squadron. Applicants for membership of the squadron must fulfill the requirements of the RAF Selection and Medical Boards.
