1. Did you know that Sheffield Alumni and honorary graduates are Presidents of three different countries?
Dr Nicholas Liverpool (PhD Law, 1965) President of the Commonwealth of Dominica
Dr Nicholas Liverpool came to Sheffield in 1962 to study for a PhD in Law. The focus of his research at University was primarily land law. He liked Sheffield as a city and had a particular affection for the Peak District and city parks. Whilst at Sheffield, Dr Liverpool played in a band alongside other students who regularly performed at the West End pub. He went on to teach at The University of West Indies and The University of Ghana. In October 2003 he became president of Dominica. Dr Liverpool received an Honorary Degree from the University in 2009.
Dr Tony Tan, Honorary Graduate (Hon LLD, 1998) President of Singapore
Dr Tony Tan is an Honorary Graduate from the University of Sheffield and became president of Singapore in 2011.

The President of Trinidad and Tobago is His Excellency Professor George Maxwell Richards, an Honorary Graduate from the University of Sheffield (LittD, 2005).
2. Did you know that the University now offers an MSc in Micro-brewing?
The development of the new MSc in Microbrewing, offered by the University’s Molecular Biology and Biotechnology department, was initiated by Professor Dave Hornby in collaboration with Kelham Island Brewery. Students on the course learn about all aspects of the brewing industry, focusing in particular on micro-brewing. Fore more information see www.shef.ac.uk/mbb/mscmicrobrewing
3. Did you know that 81% of the University’s general waste is now recycled or recovered at a Dirty MRF (Materials Recovery Facility)?
The University of Sheffield is actively involved with the ‘Green Impact’ programme. The Green Impact initiative is an environmental accreditation scheme with an awards element designed for departments across the University. Green Impact continues to grow increasingly popular in higher education institutions up and down the country. In 2012, 46 universities and colleges are taking part. The University of Sheffield is proud to be involved with Green Impact which encourages staff and students across the University to make small changes on a daily basis to result in a greener and more sustainable university.
4. The University of Sheffield - University of the Year in the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards!
The University has been named University of the Year in the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards. Beating off competition from five other shortlisted universities, the University was rewarded for its many imaginative and innovative initiatives as well as exceptional performance in research, teaching, access and business performance. 5. The University of Sheffield – Top University in Yorkshire!
The University of Sheffield was crowned the best university in Yorkshire by the Sunday Times University Guide 2012. The Sunday Times called the University of Sheffield "Yorkshire's great success story this year" as it rose to first place, overtaking York to become the region´s top university.
6. Sheffield’s Student Union – best in the UK!
Sheffield’s Student Union was rated number 1 in the UK in 2011. More than 10,000 students were surveyed for the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, which aims to show which universities offer the best all-round student experience. The Students´ Union which offers more than 200 sports clubs and societies, reopened in October last year following a £5 million refurbishment. Voted the Best Students´ Union in Britain by the Virgin Alternative Guide, the Students´ Union has constantly been reinventing itself and rebuilding since the construction of the Graves building in 1936.
7. Getting School Children to Dream Bigger Dreams
The Sheffield University Outreach and Access team work with young people from under-represented groups, encouraging them to consider going to university.
The team organise activities in schools and campus visits to help young people prepare for university life. Recently, Sheffield University launched a new website offering free resources to help teachers raise aspirations of primary school children. The website aims to help teachers increase the aspirations and ambitions of primary school children who have little contact with universities through friends or family. The online resource encourages young people to think positively about their future learning.
