The Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AMI) is a new self-standing centre for research, knowledge exchange, teaching and learning within the academic structure of the University of Sheffield.
AMI was created in 2011 in response to the continued success and growth of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). It includes:
AMRC with Boeing
The AMRC focuses on advanced machining and materials research for aerospace and other high-value manufacturing sectors. All research is led by industrial partners, ensuring that work provides lasting value. The AMRC has over 60 industrial members, from global aerospace giants to local SMEs; and employs around 200 researchers and engineers, from apprentices to PhDs. It has received numerous awards, including Boeing Supplier of the Year. The AMRC is based in two purpose-built centres, including the landmark Factory of the Future, on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Catcliffe. |
Nuclear AMRC
It combines university innovation and industry expertise to help UK manufacturers compete for nuclear contracts at home and worldwide. The Nuclear AMRC is a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and The University of Manchester. Member companies include reactor providers Areva and Westinghouse, and leading suppliers including Rolls-Royce and Sheffield Forgemasters. The Nuclear AMRC is based in a new research factory at the Advanced Manufacturing Park, and at the Nuclear AMRC Laboratory within The University of Manchester. |
Knowledge Transfer CentreOpened in March 2012, the AMI Knowledge Transfer Centre (KTC) provides dedicated meeting and training space to help us engage businesses along the manufacturing supply chain. The eye-catching building is based around a 830 sq m training workshop, where visitors can gain hands-on experience of the new manufacturing, machining and assembly techniques developed at the AMRC. The building also offers highly flexible meeting and teaching rooms, equipped with the latest presentation and networking technology. The KTC can host conferences of up to 350 people. |
AMI Training CentreOpening in autumn 2013, the AMI Training Centre will provide training in the practical and academic skills that manufacturing companies need to compete globally, from apprenticeship through to Doctorate and MBA level. The Training Centre will focus on high-level apprentice training for sectors such as aerospace, energy and Formula One. The centre will take up to 250 apprentices a year, on behalf of local businesses. The Training Centre will be based in a new 5000 sq m building, next to the AMI campus on the Advanced Manufacturing Park. |
The AMRC with Boeing and Nuclear AMRC are both members of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult (formerly the Technology & Innovation Centre). The HVM Catapult is a consortium of seven manufacturing and process research centres, backed by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB). See the Catapult page for more information.
Uniquely for the University, AMI is structured around a Board comprising senior internal officers and external appointees. Professor Keith Ridgway OBE, co-founder of the AMRC, is Executive Dean and Director of AMI. Professor Alma Hodzic has been appointed Research Director. Additional senior appointments will be announced shortly.
