Athena SWAN certificate

Equality and diversity

We are very proud to have recently been awarded our second Athena SWAN Silver award for our commitment to equality and diversity within the department, and that the University of Sheffield as a whole has also been awarded Silver. Our Action Plan is currently being revised and should be uploaded shortly so please bear with us.  We are now looking forward to the awards ceremony which will be taking place at the end of June 2016 which is being held here at the University of Sheffield.

In May 2013, we became the first department in the University of Sheffield to be given an Athena SWAN Silver award, in recognition of the steps we've taken to create an inclusive environment for staff and students. The University of Sheffield as a whole had its Athena SWAN bronze award renewed at the same time.

What we did

The Athena SWAN award recognises our department's commitment to providing a positive culture for women working in biology by addressing the gender imbalances that can prevent members of the department from reaching their full potential. Our application outlined the positive practices we have adopted and the areas of improvement which we are addressing through our action plan. In particular, the Athena SWAN judging panel praised:

  • Our strong action plan, which well be monitored by the Athena SWAN Action Committee
  • The role of the Postdoctoral Society as a forum for discussing issues and feeding back into the application process
  • The rotation of major administrative workloads
  • The successful and varied approaches we take to flexible working
