Postgraduate Study Opportunities
The Department of Archaeology is currently the largest single department of archaeology in the UK outside of London, with twenty-nine permanent academic staff. Its research interests are extensive, and range from the Palaeolithic to the post-medieval. Consequently at Sheffield we are able to offer one of the widest ranges of taught and research degrees of any UK University.
Since its formation some 25 years ago, our department has played a leading role in the development of archaeology as a modern discipline. We view archaeology as offering the fullest and most challenging perspective on human history and seek to develop archaeological research by drawing upon the integrated strengths of the humanities, and the natural and physical sciences.
Our Research Programme is organised around four broad clusters:
- Human, Plant and Animal Populations
- Archaeomaterials and Ancient Technologies
- Landscapes and Environments
- Political, Social and Economic Diversity
The department offers fourteen taught masters degrees and the research degrees of MPhil and PhD.

The department was awarded a Grade 5A in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, and the University was given the highest rating for teaching in May 2004 in the Quality Assurance Agency's institutional assessment. Our accommodation is purpose-designed, with its own laboratories and separate Graduate School. Its outstanding reputation ensures that Sheffield frequently has visiting staff from overseas and there are always a significant number of overseas students studying here. Graduates from Sheffield have been successful in competing for archaeological posts in Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia.
Our Graduate School has about 150 registered graduate students whose first degrees may be in Archaeology, Classics, History, Geography, Geology, Materials Science, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics or Computer Science. Over 60 of the registered graduate students are carrying out research for a PhD, the others are taking one of our Research Track Masters courses. Staff and students meet regularly in the weekly research seminars and we are proud of our friendly and lively atmosphere.
We hope that you will see Sheffield as the place where you wish to continue your academic studies. Should you have any queries or need further advice, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant course director or the Graduate Admissions Tutor.
