Course structure: an overview

Year 1

In your first year you'll strengthen your general understanding of world archaeology and learn the basic techniques of field and laboratory work.

Years 2 and 3

During your second and third years you'll build up a more detailed understanding of the major archaeological research issues in European archaeology. You'll also learn the procedures of archaeological analysis and theory, and undertake excavation work.

In your third year, you'll also become a fully fledged researcher by preparing your own dissertation.

Teaching and assessment

Our range of teaching and learning styles is designed to help you develop the strongest possible range of skills.

As well as lectures and seminars, we give one-to-one tuition and practical classes using purpose-built labs and other superb facilities for analysing the data you find. You can also experience work placements, giving you a head start over other archaeologists when you look for a job afterwards.

As your course progresses, you'll take more responsibility for learning on your own initiative. In your final project you'll design and carry out your own extensive programme of completely original archaeological research.

Modules

Our research has been among the UK's elite for the last two decades, and is recognised on an international level. Because of this expertise we offer you real skills and insight via a broad range of modules. For an example of what goes on in our Archaeology in Action video, take a look at the video (left).

For more information on our modules see our curriculum guide.

Study abroad

We offer our archaeology students a chance to spend part of their time in North America, Asia, Europe or Australia. You might travel abroad as part of a fieldwork project, but you can also study in Europe through the Erasmus programme or further afield via the University's Study Abroad scheme.

Erasmus

Join us and you'll be able to study for three to 12 months at one of our partner universities in Europe.

Some universities offer teaching in English, but there are also plenty of options if you're looking to learn a language or improve your skills.

You can travel to one of around 15 destinations – from Scandinavia, through western and central Europe, all the way to Italy and Greece.

Study Abroad

Take part in our Study Abroad scheme and you'll spend a year of your degree in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore or the USA.

All your work will count towards your degree back in Sheffield. But don't panic – the support and advice you receive back home will still be available on your travels.
