BSc Hons

After graduating from Sheffield University in Chemistry, I migrated into the IT field, working as a research assistant in the Information Science department on a chemical information system. I then moved into the commercial environment as a programmer before joining the School of Architecture in 1987, primarily to work under Prof. Bryan Lawson on the GABLE CAD system, developed in the School. Whilst here I have progressively taken up more of a teaching role in CAD/IT .

I enjoy building and renovation work a great deal and I am a keen practitioner and advocate of the use of lime in building, as well as being a trained lime plasterer.

I have a great love of sport and outdoor activities, particularly squash, walking, cycling (on and off-road), snowboarding and climbing. I was at one time a sailing instructor and have even been known to run the odd marathon.

Teaching Activities

I have been involved in teaching for many years in the School and now teach CAD/IT for all undergraduate years including the modules:-

ARC101/102 – Communications module
ARC221 – Computer Aided Architectural Design

I encourage a 3D model centred approach to the use of CAD, although I appreciate its use in other ways such as pure 2D drafting. I feel that the 3D approach can enhance the design process, as well as presentation, and is a much better way of coordinating the production of plans, sections, elevations and details. It also facilitates the use of other software for environmental and structural analysis and leads more easily to the use of Building Information Modelling.
