Studio Design Tutor MAUD
I was appointed Professor of Sustainable Urbanism in 2012. I am also a practicing architect, a cofounder of Bauman Lyons Architects established in 1992, Leeds, UK.
With my team I have undertaken a wide range of bespoke projects that range from small installations to large masterplans. I have worked collaboratively with artists and have facilitated many public sector and community projects.
Through my practice I seek to find application to theory and through design led research to explore the added value that architects and architecture can bring to society
Building and making places is fascinating, rewarding and demanding especially now that we are working in a constantly changing context. I believe in constant research, thinking and dissemination and in teaching of what I have observed and learned firsthand through doing.
As architects we have a choice of how to practice and there are ethical choices we can make both as professionals and as individuals. I want to teach students architecture and urban design that is underpinned by a value system that makes it worthwhile to get out of bed every morning.
| Teaching Activities |
I teach at Masters in Urban Design (MAUD) course at Sheffield School of Architecture. I have also thought in Leeds Metropolitan University School of Architecture and in Liverpool School of Architecture and have been invited to guest lectures by many Universities throughout Great Britain .I was external examiner at University of Sheffield School of Architecture, at University of Newcastle Schools of Architecture and at School of Architecture in Cardiff. In 2012/2013 I will be leading a March studio. |
| Research Interests |
My research interests are eclectic and diverse since they all relate to one overarching interest in drivers of change and their impact on the build environment and society. I am also interested in how the role of the architect is evolving in response to these changes. I use the projects in the practice as opportunities to develop methodologies and techniques to respond to the new needs within the society including enabling communities to make decision about their environment and adopting buildings and urban design to climate change. My recent research projects include ‘Margins within the City’ action research project investigating underutilised resources of skills, social networks and physical assets in the deprived community of Richmond Hill in Leeds and the potential of these underutilised resources to offer alternative models to community led regeneration. I have also complete TSB funded project, due to be published by both CIBSE and the RIBA ,to develop climate change adaptation strategy for a commercial building in Doncaster to reduce problem with overheating without resorting to mechanical cooling, and a second TSB funded project, ‘Management before Fabric’, that considers the barriers to climate adaptation that exist within management structures of large organizations. I have also led two research projects to establish possible economic and social futures for Market Towns in Yorkshire and research into the nature of Distinctiveness of small settlements. I have also collaborated on AHRC funded ‘Road to Voting’ research project with Leeds university to analyze how different disciplines such as social science, history of art , playwriting, art practice and film making can inform each other and how they can be made understandable and visible to each other. |
