I am regularly involved in designing, preparing, co-ordinating and delivering modules to a range of students on different UG and PGT courses, exploring a range of approaches to L&T.

I currently teach in the MArch (Live Project) and in the MA in Urban Design and MA in Planning and Urban Design (Urban Design Studio and Reflections on Urban Design Practice). I also supervise doctoral students and UG/PG dissertation students.

I have developed, between 2005 and 2011, an innovative curriculum in architectural management and practice, which includes Social Innovation and Community Led forms of procurement. These curriculum developments, recognised with a Senate Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching in 2009, are still unique in the UK context.

My approach to research is intrinsically collaborative, trans-disciplinary and co-operative. As a result my research focuses on several strands evolved through collaborations with colleagues across disciplines from several universities and with communities and groups within and around my projects.

A major area of interest that underpins all my work is Critical Management and Social Innovation as a model for diversifying practice. From setting up the Social Enterprise Research Exchange (SERX) within the University of Sheffield (now evolved into the Social Innovation Programme in USE (University of Sheffield Enterprise), to setting up my own architectural practice as a social enterprise (Studio Polpo), to pushing the social enterprise agenda within MArch management teaching.

A further strand of my research focuses on Emergent systems and Complexity in relation to society and design. The EPSRC funded Emerging Sustainability project, in particular, looks at sustainability as an emergent property of complex systems in the context of self-organised community initiatives and processes.

Another strand of research, stemming from my doctoral thesis, focuses on epistemological aspects of design processes and practices. I am interested, in particular, in knowledge creation and sharing, learning and innovation within design organizations and construction projects.

I am also interested in community led housing development models and shared models of living and `alternative´ and creative forms of management and procurement.

• Developing Enterprise Skills within the Architecture Curriculum, White Rose Centre for Enterprise; funding for 18 months. Amount £15,000 (awarded 2005); Developed and designed teaching material and learning activities to promote generic enterprise skills, with a focus on communication.

AWARDS

• Senate Awards Scheme for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (‘Rising Stars’ category, 2009). The award came with a grant of £2000 to be spent on learning and teaching activities which support Departments and the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategies plus a personal cash prize of £1000.
• Studio Polpo, the social enterprise architecture practice I co-founded and direct, recently won an invited competition for a “new exchange programme for talented emerging architects between the UK and Finland for 2012” organised by the Architecture Foundation, along with the Finnish Institute in London and the Museum of Finnish Architecture. Studio Polpo is one of three UK practices to represent UK in the programme and has been invited to host and take part in events in UK and Finland.
• Studio Polpo was awarded a £3,000 Innovation Voucher by Yorkshire Forward to develop a framework to effectively articulate the social return on investment (SROI) of its projects.
• Studio Polpo was also the recipient of three grants from Sheffield City Council, under their Climate Change Fund, to support urban agriculture and community gardening projects initiated.
• Studio Polpo, received a UnLtd Award (funded by the Millennium Commission), to support its start-up costs as a social enterprise- Value £3,500 (2008)
• I was awarded an EPSRC Research Associate Industrial Secondment [RIAS], with funding for one year ( Amount £30,126), 2001-2002.
