Senior University Teacher
BA(Hons) DipArch RIBA
I became Year One coordinator in the School of Architecture in 2006, having worked as a part-time studio tutor since 2001.
After graduating from Sheffield University in 1992 I spent seven years working for Building Design Partnership, where I was involved in a wide range of projects within the retail, workplace, healthcare and transport sectors.
In 1998 I became a founding partner in Sauce Architecture alongside Satwinder Samra. Recent work has included retail, office and residential projects in London, Manchester and Sheffield.
In 2011 I received a Senate Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, awarded in recognition of inspirational learning and teaching.
| Administrative Roles |
Undergraduate Course Director maintaining an overview of teaching in all three undergraduate years. Departmental representative on Teaching Commons Board. |
| Teaching Activities |
Year One Director and Studio Tutor overseeing the content and delivery of the level one programme. The year one course introduces students to architecture through an innovative and challenging range of projects. Students are encouraged to develop their design skills through playful exploration, risk taking and inquiry based learning. Studio projects engage with real contexts and encourage students to demonstrate social awareness and environmental responsibility. In 2009 the first year studio teaching team received the CILASS Award for Excellence in Inquiry Based Learning for the development and delivery of the ‘Matter-Reality’ studio design project. As well as teaching in first year I am a Professional Practice examiner for the RIBA Part 3. |
| Research Interests |
In 2010 I led a team which was awarded a grant by the RIBA/HSE Research Fund to produce a report on Health & Safety in Architectural Education. The research uses the Matter-Reality studio project as a ‘best practice’ case study in the integration of health & safety learning into architectural education. As part of the research we hosted a Symposium in January 2011 attended by academics and construction industry professionals. The report is due for publication in 2011. |
| Professional Standing & Distinctions |
Member of the RIBA since 1995. Member of selection panel for the Architecture for Everyone Shanghai Scholorship, 2010. Member of shortlisting panel for the RIBA Yorkshire Design Awards, 2009. |
