The University of Sheffield
School of Architecture

Research ethics stretches far beyond projects that work directly with human beings. All researchers in the school, whether staff, postgraduate or undergraduate students have ethical responsibilities in their relationships with peers, supervisors, the institution, funding bodies and the public.

There is a range of issues that influence the ethics and integrity of research projects, from the early design and development of a research project, through various stages of gathering and analysing of data, to the care of data and the dissemination of results. Underlying conduct through all these phases of work is the belief that people should be protected from researchers who might be tempted to use any means necessary to advance knowledge. Relevant procedures for gaining ethical approval for proposed work are explained in more detail on the links provided below.

Ethical Approval

All students will be introduced to issues of research ethics and integrity as part of their studies. Generic ethical approval is in place for dissertations and Live Projects done by undergraduate and MArch students: in the event that specific projects require more detailed Ethical Approval, this will be indicated by your tutor. Postgraduate (PGR) students and staff are expected to apply for ethical approval using the forms from Downloads.

Completed forms should be sent to the School’s Ethical Administrator and Coordinator, Dr. Rosie Parnell [r.parnell@sheffield.ac.uk]
