MArch in Architecture (RIBA Pt 2)
The MArch in Architecture course at the University of Sheffield is a two year, full time, professionally validated course in architecture that carries RIBA Part 2 exemption. The course acknowledges that architectural practice is a diverse field and prepares for this diversity through a combination of transferable analytic skills in research and synthetic design skills. The course comprises of both studio work and ‘live projects’. Studios are based around a series of thematic studios that relate to studio leaders' own research fields. The aim is to consider design within the context of thoughtful and innovative research.
Live projects are student-led design projects with real clients done in real time. They emphasise the benefits of socially-engaged design and collaborative working, producing outcomes that make a difference for the communities they work with. Each studio and live project has a mix of Year 5 MArch, Year 6 MArch, MAAD and Erasmus Exchange students. The course encourages and promotes inventive and rigorous approaches to Architectural design that not only consider social, economic and political contexts but also have cultural, spatial, technical and material propositions.
In addition to core modules, students may choose from a range of option modules in a variety of specialisms.
The MArch Course Handbook is available to download in pdf format. It is contains the same information as the hard copies issued to all students at the beginning of the year.
The MArch is recognised by the Royal Institute of British Architecture as giving exemption from RIBA Part 2. It is also prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), subject to periodic review by ARB, for the purposes of entry onto the United Kingdom Register of Architects.

| International Students |
Only candidates who have a previous qualification in architecture can be considered for admission to this professionally validated course. Candidates from overseas schools of architecture that are recognised by the RIBA, should note that you will still need to have your Part 1 confirmed by ARB (Architect's Registration Board) if you intend to work in the UK after completing your MArch and gain your Part 3. International candidates from outside of the European Union who have studied at a school of architecture that is not recognised by the RIBA must apply direct to ARB to take Part 1 as an external candidate. Any offer of a place on the MArch in Architecture would be conditional on you gaining your Part 1 prior to commencing the course. This would involve attending an interview with ARB in London. Follow the links to registration and then exam procedures. If your previous education has not been in the English language, the English requirement for overseas students wishing to be admitted to this course is normally a qualification such as IELTS with a score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component (or an equivalent qualification). The equivalent TOEFL requirement is 600 (paper) and 250 (computer). |
