The University of Sheffield
School of Architecture

1. How do I apply?

We use an online application system which asks you to complete an application form and upload associated documents. You are not required to send any hard copies to the department. The form is available on our School website:

2. Do I need all information and associated documents to apply?

- Yes please.
- Applicants are advised to upload all information at the same time; this will save time and make the process more efficient.

3. What should I include in the Portfolio?

- This should be a range of academic and practice work.
- Use this as an opportunity to show your breadth and range of experience.
- We do not need every drawing from every project.
- Feel free to include extra activities i.e. competitions, workshops, fieldtrips etc.
- This should be 10-12 sheets
- Please keep file size for this to a max of 10Mb

4. How much practical experience do I need to apply?

You are required to have undertaken 9 months or more practical work experience in the field of Architecture by the start date of the course. We may consider less in exceptional circumstances and it is best to contact us to discuss this before you apply.

5. Who should write my references and what should they include?

You will need two references ideally one from your previous University and one from a previous or current Employer. The reference should include how long the referee has known you and in what capacity, work undertaken by you, your attendance record and their opinion of your suitability for the MArch course.

6. What should the Personal Statement include?

This should reflect on your previous Architectural experiences. We would also like to know why you have applied to study at the Sheffield School of Architecture. It is always of value to know what is your architectural approach and what areas of the subject you are really interested in. The statement should be between 500-750 words.

7. What is the deadline for applications?

The closing date for applications is end of April 2013. We will still consider applications after this date however your chance of a place will be limited.

8. How will I know that my application has been received?

You will receive an email confirmation containing your application number soon after submitting.

9. What is the timescale for processing?

We aim to process your application in 3-4 weeks from receipt. If you are successful you will be invited for interview. Unsuccessful applications will be notified by letter. (Due to the large number of applications we are unable to provide feedback).

10. Do you have any open days?

The dates for the open days are being finalised.

It is not essential that you come for an open day as if you are asked for interview you will have ample opportunity to look around the department, view studios and facilities and also meet students who are on the MArch at present.

11. What is the format for the interview?

The interview will be approx. 30 minutes long and will be an opportunity for you to discuss your experience to date, why you want to study at the Sheffield School Of Architecture and what your future career plans are after completing your MArch. You will be interviewed by either by Satwinder Samra, Russell Light or Carolyn Butterworth.

12. What should I bring to the interview?

Please bring a portfolio which should include examples of academic and practice work. Feel free to include any dissertations, essays that you may have completed at university. You can also bring along any reports that you may have worked on in Practice. It is always good to see a mixture of work and please include a couple of sketchbooks.

13. Do I still need to come for an interview if I am working abroad, can we use SKYPE instead?

If you are invited to an interview but working/travelling abroad we can offer SKYPE interviews. Please contact if you would like to do this. We would require you to send a PDF of your portfolio prior. The Skype interview normally last between 20-30 mins. We are flexible with timings so as to accommodate international time zones.

14. How soon will I know if I have a place after the interview?

You will be sent an email notifying you of our decision approx. 7-14 days after. This will include information on how to accept and notify the dept.

15. How many places do you have on the programme?

Last year we had 250 applications for 25/30 places. We envisage this to be similar this year.

16. What are the fees for the MArch 2014 entry?

If you started your Undergraduate course before 2012, you will still be on the lower fee for the MArch here at Sheffield.
Current fees are available at:

17. Do I need Part 1 qualification to apply?

Ideally all applicants should have a Part 1 recognised qualification. However we are happy to receive applications from international students who do not have Part 1. If they are successful in being offered a place it will be individual student’s responsibility to gain Part 1. You can do this whilst you are here on your MArch Part 2 course. More information on this is available at

18. Can I defer my place?

if you are offered a place for entry in 2014 you will be able to defer until 2015.

19. Any other advice?

- Make sure you have all the information uploaded together
- Try and ensure you keep to the data limit for your portfolio - big files can be difficult to download and take longer to view
- Please check all your submissions for spelling and typos
- Give your referees plenty of notice to write your references – they are likely to be inundated with similar requests.
- Keep to the word limit on the personal statement - remember this is not an essay just a brief overview.
- The interview is not like a ‘crit’ but an opportunity for us to assess your suitability for our course and a chance for you to discuss why you want to study in Sheffield. We aim for this to be informal but make sure you know your work and have things in order.

We hope this has been useful, if you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us at
