About the School of Architecture

The Arts Tower - Home to the School of Architecture

The School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield was established in 1907 and since then has built up an enviable reputation for excellence. It is widely recognised as one of the leading schools of architecture in Europe.

The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirm the School´s position as a world class centre for architectural research. 35% of our staff were rated as 4* (world leading), which is the highest percentage score achieved by any School of Architecture. 70% of our research was graded in the 4* or 3* (internationally excellent) categories. These results, together with our excellent ratings (Grade 5) in the two previous RAEs, make Sheffield the only School in the UK to have achieved and maintained this level of research performance.

Research, innovation and vigorous debate

The School aims to combine an international reputation for research with a vigorous and critical debate about the future of architecture. The ethos of the School combines innovation with rigor - qualities that are sought after by future employers.

Research is not treated as an isolated discipline. It informs the teaching in the School, as well as having direct application to industry, practice and society.

The School has one of the largest cohort of full-time architecture academics in the country, and is thus able to offer skills and specialisms across the whole range of architecture. We attract high caliber students on all our courses, creating a stimulating environment for the study and research of architecture.

Award-winning students

The School has over 400 students and a very lively student society (SUAS) which organises an evening lecture series and social events.

Students from Sheffield have consistently won prizes in national and international competitions over the past ten years, including the RIBA Presidents Medals, British Steel and Oasys Awards.

Faculty of Social Sciences

The School of Architecture, Department of Landscape, and Department of Town and Regional Planning are members of the Faculty of Social Sciences. All three departments are highly ranked in their own fields and together form one of the UK's leading centres for the study of the Built and Natural Environment. Interdisciplinary teaching and research activities are encouraged across the departments, which host dual degrees in Architecture and Landscape and Architecture and Town Planning. These courses, together with the dual degree in Architecture and Structural Engineering and the MEng in Architectural Engineering, are pioneers in providing the cross-disciplinary education and skills required to deal with the emerging global environmental challenges of the 21st Century.
