Why Choose the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education

The Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education provides the opportunity for those who work within a medical environment with a developing interest in medical education, to explore the theoretical principles underpinning medical education and consider how this relates to their practice. The aim of the course is to develop medical educators who are informed and understand the core principles and issues in medical education and reflect upon how these principles can be applied within their own teaching practice.

Course Outline

The Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education consists of four modules. Each module includes two study days, two tutorial group meetings and individual tutorials.During the two study days, the core elements of the module will be explored, with examples from practice being used to illustrate key components. The two tutorial group meetings will provide the opportunity for more in-depth exploration of context specific issues (such as those areas particularly relevant for General Practice, Hospital Consultants or Foundation Trainee). Additionally, participants are able to arrange individual tutorials with their personal tutor. Each participant is allocated a personal tutor at the start of the course. The tutorials provide an opportunity for discussion about the portfolio, or aspects of learning and teaching development or any issues the participant or tutor wish to discuss. Participants will be expected to critically reflect on their learning and consider the impact of this learning on their practice, within their reflective portfolio. All modules are underpinned by relevant policy, educational research and critical reflection.
