Scholarship available for new undergraduates who wish to take New Testament Greek modules
Denis Henry Bott Scholarship package offers £1000 for first year undergraduate study of New Testament Greek

The Department of Biblical Studies is pleased to be able to offer a £1,000 scholarship for the Undergraduate Study of New Testament Greek. The opportunity arises because of the generous donation to the University by Dennis Henry Bott
Mr. Denis Henry Bott - (1927-2011) died in 2011 aged 84. He gained Distinctions in Greek and Latin and won the coveted Earnshaw Scholarship for the study of classics at the University of Sheffield where he achieved a 1st class degree in BA Classics. Whilst at Sheffield he also won a share of the Gibbons Prize. Mr. Bott taught at Corby Grammar School for thirteen happy years and then had fourteen years in the Rutland VIth Form College at Oakham, Uppingham where he had a very enjoyable time teaching the Classics in the VIth Form. He was a Lay Reader for over 50 years and Churchwarden of Drayton for 24 years.
The scholarship is available for the academic year 2013-14 and will be awarded to the best candidate who has submitted an application for the award. To be eligible to apply the candidate needs to have firmly accepted the offer of a conditional or unconditional place on the Religion, Theology and the Bible degree for entry in 2013.
Applications are to be made direct to the Head of Department by June 20th, 2013. The successful candidate will be notified by 31st August once their place at Sheffield has been confirmed.
Candidates should apply by writing a statement of not more than 500 words, outlining why they consider the study of New Testament Greek to be an important part of their education and to also give some indication of their suitability for the award. The scholarship will be paid to the successful candidate in two instalments, with the second instalment subject to satisfactory progress.
The successful candidate will be expected to enrol for the 1st Year Greek classes - NT Greek A and NT Greek B. It is hoped that the successful candidate will also continue with NT Testament Greek in the second and third years of their degree making the area their speciality.
The Department of Biblical Studies at Sheffield has a fine reputation for teaching and research into Biblical Languages and is the home of the first ever Dictionary of Classical Hebrew ( 8 volumes). Students are taught NT Greek by leading scholars in the field and they are able to make full use of the resources available in the department for the study of NT Greek including a range of Greek texts, lexicons and dictionaries and interactive computer learning environments.
