If yes, our MA courses will introduce you to the latest thinking on this remarkable collection of texts that has shaped our modern world and offers a window into ancient cultures, as taught by leading researchers in the field. Our MA courses include a mix of core and optional modules. You will research your own interests in an extended dissertation and you’ll have the opportunity to pursue your own interests through a range of optional modules.

You will study in small groups along with talented students drawn from around the world. All our courses are designed to equip you with valuable employment skills and prepare you for your future career. If you decide to continue your studies and undertake doctoral research, you’ll develop a solid grounding from which you can develop a career in academia.

MA Archaeology, the Bible and Ancient Cultures

MA Archaeology, the Bible and Ancient Cultures is the only course of its type in the UK. It offers a unique opportunity to work with experts in both fields, exploring the interface between the two disciplines and grappling with the questions raised by textual and physical evidence. It is jointly taught with the Department of Archaeology who also offer the MA Classical and Ancient World course.

MA Biblical Studies Research enables you to develop the skills to engage with current biblical research in a way tailored to your personal interests and to what you need for your future success. It will deepen your grounding in the field and provide ideal preparation for research study at MPhil/PhD level, if that is your goal.

MA Religion, Conflict and the Media

MA Religion, Conflict and the Media looks at the roles of religion and religious language in the media: television, newspapers, websites, blogs and social networking. There is an emphasis on the construction of religion in relation to violence.

Taught courses overview

Student working in The Department of Biblical Studies

Duration

• Full-time: one year
• Part-time: two years.

Part time study

All of our taught courses can be studied full-time or part-time.
If you study part-time you’ll attend two days per week and we’ll try to be as flexible as possible to meet your needs.

Entry requirements

Minimum 2:1 honours degree, or equivalent.
Full entry requirements, including the English language requirements, are detailed on the individual course entries.

Teaching and supervision

You’ll attend lectures, seminars and tutorials. During your dissertation you’ll be supervised by one of our academic staff, who’ll provide you with guidance on your topic and methodology. You will have access to a dedicated computer room for students in The Department of Biblical Studies and Philosophy and access to The Clines Library - a resource donated by former Head of Department, Emeritus Professor David Clines, for your exclusive on-site use. 

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework assignments and a dissertation.
Those achieving an average of 60% or higher will be considered for entry for our research degree programmes (MPhil-PhD).

Course structure

Our taught courses include a mix of core and optional modules. In addition, you’ll research your own interests in an extended dissertation.
