BA (Honours) Theological Studies

This course is aimed at those involved in Christian ministry, both lay and ordained.

Teaching and facilities

Teaching takes place at the College of the Resurrection at Mirfield, and at the Department of Biblical Studies in Sheffield depending on your chosen modules.

You'll have access to the College’s library and the University’s facilities including the library and sports facilities. Your graduation ceremony will take place at the University of Sheffield.

Entry requirements

You should have a Foundation degree in Theology and Ministry or another relevant subject, or have evidence of appropriate study.

If you've already gained a first degree in another subject, and have significant experience of Christian ministry, you may be eligible to begin the course at level 2.

Course overview

This course enables those involved in Christian ministry to engage with a range of theological subjects, informed by recent research and scholarship, and to relate their studies to pastoral practice.

The course is approved by the Church of England for the academic and professional formation of Christian ministers, both lay and ordained. It does this in a context that offers you an awareness of the variety of Christian traditions, practices and cultures historically, globally and locally.

You'll develop an understanding of the interrelationship between Christian ministry, theology and broader cultural currents. By the end of the course you'll have:

You may choose to study a Biblical language (Greek or Hebrew) in place of an optional module at any level.

Level 1

You'll spend at least one third of your time studying Biblical Studies core modules:

  • Decoding the Old Testament
  • Decoding the New Testament

The rest of your time is given to a range of modules laying a foundation for academic study in general and the study of theology in particular; modules include:

  • Sources of Christian Identity
  • Introduction to Christian History
  • Ministry and Practice (with placement)
  • Religion in Britain Today

Level 2

You'll spend one third of your time on Biblical Studies, shared between old and new Testaments, and also take a range of optional modules.

  • Theology of Mission
  • Ministry in the Church
  • Christian Liturgy

Optional modules

  • Creation to the Sinai Revelation: Torah (Genesis –Deuteronomy)
  • From Settlement to Exile: Constructing the Story of Israel
  • Prophecy and Prophetic Literature
  • Old Testament Studies

Select one from:

  • The Fourfold Gospel
  • The Letters of Paul
  • New Testament Studies

Level 3

In addition to core and optional modules, you'll complete a dissertation.
