MPhil in Biblical Studies: Overview
Our MPhil, as is typical in British universities, is a research degree, so students do not do standard graduate coursework. Instead, they begin researching a thesis immediately and spend their entire programme concentrating on this task. The standard period of research for the MPhil is two years.
The MPhil programme serves two roles: it is a complete degree programme for those seeking an MPhil degree, and it is a stepping-stone to the PhD programme for those seeking a PhD.
Supervision
After acceptance, a student is assigned to one of the academic staff as supervisor, based on their intended topic. The two meet regularly to discuss the student's work. Once submitted, the thesis is defended in a formal session with an internal and external examiner.
Seminars
All research students are assigned to membership in a departmental Research Group reflecting their research interests. Research students are expected to attend the weekly research seminar and present a short paper annually. They may audit BA and MA courses in the Department free of charge.
