PhD in Biblical Studies: Overview
Our PhD, as is typical in British universities, is a research degree, so students do not do standard graduate coursework before beginning their doctoral thesis. Instead, they begin researching their thesis immediately and spend their entire programme concentrating on this task.
Also, as with most British universities, our normal admissions practice is to accept students into the MPhil programme initially and then transfer them to the PhD programme at the end of the first year of research, if their progress has been satisfactory and they show evidence of ability to complete a doctoral thesis. The standard period of research is three years for full-time students, including time spent in the MPhil programme.
Supervision
After acceptance, a student is assigned to one of the academic staff as supervisor, based on their intended topic. The two meet regularly to discuss the student's work. Once submitted, the thesis is defended in a formal session with an internal and external examiner.
Seminars
All research students are assigned to membership of a Research Group based on their research interests. Those in residence are expected to attend the weekly research seminar and present a short paper annually. They may audit BA and MA courses in the Department free of charge.
