How will a degree in Biblical Studies prepare you for employment?

We believe in student-centred learning and that the skills you gain in this Department are just as valuable as the information you acquire.

Matt Broughton: 'Biblical Studies creates a base from which anything is possible.'

At the end of your BA degree, not only will you be able to examine and analyse the Bible at an advanced level and have a degree from one of Britain's top universities, but you also will have gained valuable job skills that employers are looking for when hiring and later, when promoting. You will have had the opportunity to acquire a multitude of transferable skills that will help in getting you a job and keep you employable in the 21st century.

What skills will you develop?

Students are asked to analyse, evaluate and synthesise information from a range of sources. You will learn to see, understand and explain ideas and opinions from very different perspectives. You are also encouraged to identify patterns, solve problems and develop original responses to the questions posed.

Our mixture of learning and teaching methods will hone your presentation skills, so you can be both persuasive and precise. Several modules include group-work components, while at level 3 the dissertation module (compulsory) gives you experience of project planning. You will also need good time management skills, and a coherent writing style, to get your coursework completed successfully.

Learning Hebrew and Greek gives students access to individual biblical texts and their ambiguities; this will also require you to develop a good eye for detail.
