The uses of Speech Act theory in Biblical hermeneutics
Hugh Pyper

A critical examination of some of the ways in which J L Austin's Speech Act theory of language has been used as a tool in Biblical hermeneutics, proposing that the flaws in the theory and its usage render it ineffective. A better alternative is suggested, based around the linguistic theory associated with Mikhail Bakhtin, which supports a more theologically accurate concept of Revelation.
