Sheffield´s bioscience knowledge base is globally respected and is conducted by a team of talented and highly collaborative researchers within 12 departments. This multidisciplinary approach, driven by ongoing investments, enables Sheffield University to exploit superb facilities to excel in key areas and attract talented bioscientists. Stem Cell Biology

The world class Centre for Stem Cell Biology provides training and undertakes research, is licensed to derive human embryonic stem cells, and is investing £2.5 million in a GMP stem cell production facility.

Developmental and Biomedical Genetics

Some of the finest facilities and expertise in analysing processes disrupted in neurodegenerative diseases and cancers.

Plant Sciences

32 state-of-the-art climate chambers form part of a £15 million investment that have enhanced already superb facility and expertise in whole organism and environmental biology.

Nanotechnology and Tissue Engineering

The new Kroto Institute and Nanoscience and Technology Centre are enabling Sheffield academics to maintain their position at the forefront of both fields.

Polymer Science

The Polymer Centre offers world-class expertise and technological know-how to solve technical problems for industry, develops innovative materials and undertakes training, consultancy and contract research activities.

Centre for Analytical Sciences

Provides spectrochemical analysis using GLP facilities to the life science, materials and environmental sectors.

Centre for Chemical Biology

Has expertise in multi-disciplinary analysis of molecular interactions and the synthesis of combinatorial libraries, lipids, biomaterials and bioprobes.

School of Medicine

Has expertise in broad areas in the pathologies of human disease, commercial collaboration, enviable core facilities including a micro array facility, high throughput DNA sequencing and flow cytometry services.

Clinical Research

With one of the UK´s largest patient catchments Sheffield is active in all stages of clinical research, and continued investment, including a new Clinical Research Facility at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, will increase capacity in this area.

Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

With an enviable record of engaging industrial partners in collaborative research this grouping has world-class cryo-EM, crystallography and NMR facilities.
