Entry and application
Entry requirements: MRC/BBSRC requirements apply. First class or upper second 2(i) in a relevant subject.
Typically we would expect your bachelor degree to have a significant content of subjects relevant to biomedicine, including some of the following: molecular biology, molecular genetics, animal cell biology, animal genetics, animal physiology, animal development.
We accept qualifications from a British University or the equivalent from an overseas institution (please consult our Admissions team for details of equivalence). Relevant additional work or research experience may also be taken into account during the selection process.
English language qualifications. If your first language is not English you will have to demonstrate your proficiency in English. For further information see our International Students section.
To apply formally for a PhD Studentship within the department, you must complete the University's online application form.
You will be asked to provide copies of various supporting documents, and in the case of international students, evidence of your English language ability. The University has provided additional information and advice to help you prepare before applying. See: Applying essentials
Prospective PhD students must indicate at least one preferred supervisor* and should select "Department of Biomedical Science". This applies to all PhD applicants, including those applying for projects listed under our research centres - the MRC Centre for Developmental and Biomedical Genetics, the Centre for Stem Cell Biology, and the Centre for Membrane Interactions and Dynamics.
*Students applying for a PhD with Integrated Studies should indicate 'Integrated Studies PhD' as the degree applied for and 'Professor Steve Winder' as their preferred supervisor.
