Year in Industry and Summer Vacation Projects
Getting some relevant work experience during your degree is really important for your future career development. At the university there are loads of opportunities to gain work experience. You can find out how you can benefit and what's on offer via othe University Careers Service.
BMS Students
As a BMS student and if you interested in going into research, we offer two opportunities for work experience.
Year Out in Industry - Lab and non-lab based placements
This takes place at the end of your second year. Most placements are in the pharmaceutical industry, where you work for 12 months before returning to complete your degree. Places are awarded competitively, with the application process beginning at the start of the second year. Staff within Biomedical Science and the Careers Service help students identify places available and put their applications together. Placements are open to all students in Biomedical Science, although typically you will need good grades in your first year to be considered.
If you do the year in industry it will take you a total of four years to complete your degree, and your work experience is recognised as you graduate with a degree in Biomedical Science with Work Experience.
For information on the types of placements on offer, see our Current Undergraduate page - Placement Opportunities.
Summer Vacation Projects
For those of you who would like some research experience but don“t want to take a year out we also offer summer vacation positions. In these positions students work for eight weeks in a research laboratory, typically in the summer between the second and final years. Again these placements are awarded on a competitive basis, so you will need good level one grades!
For information on the types of projects on offer, see our Current Undergraduate page - Vacation Studentship Information.
