BMS6051 - Retrieval and Evaluation of Research Information (30 credits)

Aims
Before starting on the laboratory component of their research, project students must undertake an in depth survey of the literature relevant to the project and prepare a research proposal. Students will be required to carry out an exhaustive search of material relevant to their project using the resources of the University, including the web. This will involve primarily private study by the student under the direction of the project supervisor who will meet with the student at regular intervals to ensure satisfactory progress. The module will be assessed on the basis of a written report (80%) and a compulsory oral presentation (20%) targeted at a non-specialist audience.
Content
The module will primarily involve private study but with the support and direction of the project supervisor. Seminar will give guidelines on information search, format and scientific writing and how to prepare your oral presentation.
Objectives
By the end of the module students should be able to:
- seek and obtain information specific to their project making use of IT and other indexing
systems. - identify relevant clinical, pathological and social issues that relate to the project.
- select and interpret critically, information relevant to the project.
- demonstrate the development of written presentation skills by the preparation of a
report to specific guidelines. - demonstrate word processing skills.
- present material orally in a 15 minute presentation
Teaching Methods
Seminar on scientific writing with one to one progress meetings throughout the module with the project supervisor.
Assessment
6000 word project/dissertation 80%
Oral presentation 20%
