Hi Everyone!
First of all, congratulations for gaining a place at the University of Sheffield to study Biomedical Science!! My name is Adam Cohen and I'm the President of the Biomedical Science Society (BMSSoc) for the upcoming academic year. Here, I'll explain a little about what the society is all about and why (and how) you should join.
BMSSoc is one of the largest and most successful student run societies within the Sheffield Students union and exists to provide its members (you!) with the best possible student experience. The committee is elected every year in March and is made up of a set of BMS student volunteers who work throughout the year to organise fun events where you can meet new friends, add things to your CV or just enjoy yourselves.
As a society we pride ourselves on delivering a vast array of activities for our members at discounted prices seldom matched throughout the University. These range from our legendary themed bar crawls, fun random days out (e.g. Alton towers, ice skating and quasar) to our annual 3 day weekend abroad – Amsterdam being the most recent-). BMSSoc works tirelessly to put on events suitable for everyone and anyone, and we're always up for new ideas!
BMSSoc organises a variety of opportunities to cater for virtually every taste: From our ever expanding successful sports teams (6’s and 11’s football, badminton, netball, running and rugby) to charity and volunteering opportunities in and around the local community including working in an after school science club for 9-12 year olds. Last year, our campaign Beating MS raised over £500 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, by putting on bar crawls in some of the biggest bars in Sheffield, having several bake sales and organising an end of year charity masquerade ball where over 200 BMS members laughed, danced and drank the night away.
Furthermore we organise careers talks with a variety of companies which include AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline. Also this year we will continue to work with other societies in and outside of the university to bring you even bigger and better events.
Want to get more involved? We will be appointing a 1st year representative in September, so listen out for more info if you’re interested! We look forward to meeting you all in September!
What else we do
“Biomedical Science Society is an incredibly active society, run for the BMS students, by a group of elected BMS students. The different members of the committee each have their own roles, but all work together to organise fantastic opportunities for you all. Both social events and activities in sports and volunteering help make sure you get the most out of your degree. We all love BMSSOC, and we think you will too!” - Holly, Communications Officer
Charity/Volunteering
Greetings! I’m Hazel, charity and volunteering secretary at your service. We will be doing some feel-good volunteering and conscience-nurturing charity fund-raising with our marvellous Society this year. We will be continuing with the excellent BMS Science Club organising more charity events and including charitable elements in our events and socials. Last year the BMS Science Club was a weekly after school activity whereby BMSSOC volunteers taught Science (with a BMS approach) in creative and interactive sessions to Year 6 pupils. The Science Club was received with excellent feedback from the school. Due to its great reception, the weekly Science Club will be continuing in the same vein next year! During Charity Week, BMSSoc were very involved in fundraising activities such as selling glowsticks, donuts, hosting charity night outs and collecting money at film nights, just to name a few! There will be a meeting about volunteering with BMS and the BMS Science Club for those who are interested and we will be recruiting volunteers during Freshers Fortnight. If you prefer volunteering for one-off events, watch out for them in the upcoming year!
Events
Hey, our names are Laura & Anthoulla and we are your events secretaries. Last year our event secretaries took us on a trip to Amsterdam and organised an amazing ball at the Mercure Hotel. This year we aim to follow and improve on the success of last year’s events. We will be planning a trip to Alton Towers in the first term which will hopefully help you to get to know others on your course and experience the fun of taking part in BMS events. We’ve got some great ideas in mind for the trip abroad, however ,we want to work out the logistics before confirming them to you and, as is tradition, we’ll be holding the annual BMS ball at the end of the year. Looking forward to meeting you all and welcome to BMS.
Socials
I am Shravya and I will be your Social Sec for this year! The Social Sec is responsible for organizing social interactions within BMS as well as with other societies. These events range from casual meets all the way to our infamous BMS Night Outs! All to make your time in BMS the most memorable moments ever! Last year, the Social Secs organized marvelous outings like going ice skating, brilliant pub crawls, and showed us what its all about to be in BMS. For your first year, we will be going above and beyond with our BMS socials. From marvelous to magnificent outings! From brilliant to heaven exploding night outs! And to add a bit of extra spice to your already quite mesmerizing pallet, we at BMSsoc have something very special planned that will blow your socks off. We look forward to having all of you here with us, and you should look forward to BMS because it will be the best time of your life!
Sports
Hey everyone! We're Josh and Ellen and we are your sports secs this year! BMSsoc has many sports teams that compete against other societies in the university's intra mural programme. Last year we ended on a high with football just missing out on our league top spot by one point while netball, running and badminton continued to produce good results with a great attendance to each. This year we will be looking build on last years success and hopefully reintroduce the once dominant BMS rugby side. While success is great in sports it is not fundamental. The paramount aspect we concentrate on is having fun. Throughout the year we hold themed sport socials that were a huge hit last year and we encourage everyone to come along to. We will also hold the annual BMS charity netball game (with a twist) featuring the netball team vs the football team which is always a great afternoon and a top laugh. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Inclusions
Hi all, my name’s Bill and I’m the new treasurer and inclusions officer for BMS. Last year we were left with a good amount of money to spend over the course of this year and it’s my job to help with the allocation of these funds and to secure more funds so that we can have more fun. My role as inclusions officer means that you can approach me with any concerns or issues that you have with the society or about uni in general. I really want to make sure we have a more diverse and fun BMSsoc and that everyone feels happy that we’re providing the right service for you. I wish you all the best over the coming year and I hope to see many of you at our activities!
