We're internationally renowned as a centre of excellence for cardiovascular research. We offer an inspiring location to learn and a friendly welcome to all.

About Us

The Department is led by Dr Sheila Francis and comprises of three research themes; Cardiovascular Biomechanics, Inflammatory Mechanisms and Thrombosis & Haemostasis.  The Department is home to 27 academic, clinical and research faculty. We are based at The University of Sheffield Medical School.

Our Teaching

We are actively engaged in graduate and postgraduate teaching and research and host more than 60 PhD/MD and MSc/BmedSci candidates for the duration of their studies.  We have recently launched a new Cardiovascular module on the popular MSc in Molecular Medicine at Sheffield.

Our Research

We utilise genetic, cellular and clinical research in cardiovascular medicine with use of patient samples to translate discovery science from basic programmes.

The Science Of The Zebrafish

The zebrafish is amazing. It can heal its own heart. Scientists believe they can unlock the secrets of the zebrafish to repair our damaged heart muscle. The BHF are funding Dr Tim Chico and his team to undertake research studying zebrafish to determine the way that new heart muscle and blood vessels develop.

Software helps diagnose Coronary Heart Disease

Researchers in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Julian Gunn (Senior Lecturer in the Department of Cardiovascular Science) are developing enhanced computer software to assess patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) – the narrowing of the arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart.
