Biography:
I joined the University of Sheffield as Clinical Senior Lecturer in 2006 with interests in adult diagnostic neuroradiology and novel MR imaging agents. Prior to that I had been an NHS Consultant Neuroradiologist at the Manchester Neurosciences Centre, Hope Hospital Salford from 2003. Between 2002 and 2003 I completed my MD whilst working as a Consultant cross sectional Radiologist. Between 1999 and 2002 I was a Radiology Research Fellow at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. My MD thesis was on the MR imaging of non-traumatic intracranial haemorrhage and its causes. I was a Radiology trainee in Manchester from 1994 to 1999, obtaining my FRCR in 1997 and CCST 1999. I undertook a series of SHO posts in Oxford, London and Liverpool from 1992 to 1994, obtaining my MRCP in 2004. I was a House Officer in Norwich and Cambridge between 1991-1992. I went to Medical School at the University of Cambridge, 1985 to 1990, MB BChir 1991.
Research Interests:
My research interests remain primarily centred on the diagnostic applications of MR imaging in radiology with a particular emphasis on neuroscience and head and neck imaging.
Teaching Interests:
I am the lead for the academic clinical radiology training scheme. We have had 5 ACFs to date and one academic clinical lecturer. I currently teach on the BMedSci ethics course and the Neuroscience Masters course. I undertake regular teaching in neuroradiology on the Fundamentals of Radiology course here in Sheffield, and on the National ENT imaging course. I undertake regular FRCR part II teaching and I sit on the Royal College of Radiologists FRCR Part I Physics exam committee.
Professional Activities:
- Deputy Editor British Journal of Radiology 2010-present.
- Expert Advisory Panel member, Commission for Human Medicines/MHRA 2009-present.
- Cancer Peer reviewer 2012-present.
- Member of the Royal College of Radiologists FRCR part I examination committee 2011-present.
- British Society of Neuroradiologists representative NIHR fellowship selection panel member 2011.
- NICE guideline specialist interventions committee, 2009-present.
- Secretary British Society of Neuroradiologists research sub-committee 2010-present.
- British Society of Neuroradiologists du Boulay Travelling professorship 2011-2012.
- Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Research lead for the Directorate of Radiology at 2008-present.
- I am academic programme director for Radiology and a member of the Clinical Academic Working Group 2010-present.
- Member of the Sheffield Regional Ethics committee 2006-2012.
Current Projects:
- Diagnostic neuroradiology:
(a) Cerebellar imaging - Stuart Currie is currently undertaking a PhD looking at ataxia imaging, gluten sensitivity (in collaboration with Marios Hadjivassiliou, we are part of the SIGReD group, a multi-disciplinary research group focussed on gluten related diseases) and effects of alcohol. This is using MR spectroscopy, resting state fMRI and VBM; in the future we wish to extend this research to population cerebellar functional imaging.
(b) Neuro-oncology - Clinical application of MR spectroscopy and perfusion imaging in brain tumour evaluation. MR perfusion imaging: we have developed in house software for histogram analysis of perfusion data and evaluated imaging interrogation strategies.
(c) Incidental findings and communication of coincidental information with patients.
(d) Epilepsy - I collaborate with Paul Armitage assessing the use of recent image analysis techniques for the analysis of patient with focal onset epilepsy but normal conventional MR imaging.
(e) Central Nervous system cell density MR contrast agent - Successful in vitro tests 2012; applying for ethics for in human studies, supervising ACF Richard List later in 2012. - Bone imaging:
(a) Joint loosening - I am working on imaging prosthetic joint replacement loosening in collaboration with Mark Wilkinson and Martyn Paley. I have devised a CT method for this and we are investigating MR techniques.
(b) Bone turnover - I am collaborating with Dr Simon Jones (University of Sheffield, department of Chemistry) and Promethean Particles (Nottingham, UK). We have an EPSRC PhD student due to start very soon. We are developing my designs for novel imaging agents which are now at the stage of biological testing. This has been supported to date by KTA, EPSRC KTA and NIHR funding.
