Skills for Success sessions
What is Skills for Success?
Our Skills for Success sessions are interactive, workshop-style sessions that provide an opportunity for students to learn about and practise the skills that employers seek in their graduate recruits. They are held on campus on afternoons in the Autumn and Spring semesters and enable students to learn about key skills and competencies in an informal environment. There is no charge to employers for running a session.
Why take part?
Consider contributing to Skills for Success if you want to:
- make contact with our students in an informal, workshop style environment
- contribute to the development of employability skills amongst University of Sheffield students
- build your profile amongst students in all years and subjects
- project an approachable and student-oriented image
What makes a successful Skills for Success session?
We have been running skills sessions at Sheffield for a number of years now and feedback from our students and staff indicates that a successful session has the following attributes:
- offers maximum participation – a brief introduction and overview of the session is useful but students expect to learn by doing.
- is specific and focussed on skills – company information may be provided at the end of the session but should not dominate (facilities for employer presentations are available – please ask us for details)
- has clear learning outcomes – students need to know what they will learn by attending the session
- is run by experienced/trained staff – it is important that your representatives know their material and are confident in presenting the session, to ensure that they give a positive image of your organisation
- is not too long or too short – 2 hours is judged to be about the right length
- handouts!
