Planning your Recruitment

Our experienced Employer Liaison and Student Jobshop teams can work with you on developing and delivering an effective recruitment campaign at the University of Sheffield.

By gaining a good understanding of your needs and resources, and with our internal networks and knowledge of the University, we are confident that we can work with you to identify the most effective strategies.

When planning your recruitment, here are a few recommendations which may help you target the right audience and schedule your activities effectively.

Timing your profile raising

Semester dates vary from one university to another. Dates of semesters, exams and vacations at the University of Sheffield for 2012-13 are as follows:

Some students begin looking for placements, internships and graduate jobs early on in the academic year, whereas others begin their job search later on. An increasing number of students do not begin looking for a graduate job until they have completed their studies so that they can concentrate their efforts on achieving the best grades they can. This is worth bearing in mind when you are scheduling any on-campus activities and also if and when you are setting closing dates.

myVacancies

If you are advertising a number of vacancies or continuously recruiting, to ensure that your opportunities are seen by as many relevant students as possible it is important that you maintain a high profile throughout the academic year. This should include advertising and updating your vacancy information regularly by using myVacancies.

Any physical profile raising activities you may wish to undertake on-campus will generally need to take place during the periods mid-October to mid-December or mid-February to Easter. These include presentations, one-to-one sessions, occupational talks and workshops, Skills for Success sessions, mock interviews and applications workshops. Our staff can provide advice on suitable timings and ensure that your event does not clash with anything else which may affect attendance. Our facility for advertising vacancies is available year-round.

Deciding which courses to target

Students develop a wide range of skills whilst studying at the University of Sheffield, therefore it is worth considering promoting your opportunities to all students, irrespective of discipline, if your vacancies do not require specific vocational knowledge. If your vacancies are not open to any discipline, consider which courses you would like to target.

Developing relationships with other parts of the University - Students' Union | Student societies

We can help you develop relationships with appropriate academic departments or put you in touch with other parts of the University such as the Students’ Union and student societies. There are often opportunities for you to become involved by offering such things as project work, case studies, prizes and awards.
