Information for Staff and CRS

This section of the Careers Service website has been developed for University staff helping students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to progress on to rewarding and fullfilling careers.

There is also a dedicated section for Contract Research staff, available on the left hand menu.

Working with staff in academic departments

Our Services to Students (available on the left hand menu), provides more detail on what we offer students, although increasingly much of what we offer is through working together with academic departments.

For each department, the Careers Service provides a Careers Adviser, who is responsible for liaising with a nominated departmental Careers Liaison Officer. A list of Careers Advisers and CL Officers is available to download as a PDF file.

Careers Advisers help academic departments by:

  • supporting career and employability skills within the curriculum. This can take the form of talks and workshops in your department.
  • providing expertise in relation to skills development, work based learning, career planning and graduate opportunities.
  • providing graduate first destination statistics for internal use.
  • supporting the development of links to organisations that can provide opportunities to students.
  • providing an informed view of the graduate labour market and its requirements.
  • regularly updating departments on Careers Service events including skills sessions, fairs, employer presentations, talks and workshops.

You can help the Careers Service and your students by:

  • nominating a member of staff to act as the Careers Liaison Officer. The CLO will act as the main contact between the Careers Service and the department.
  • promoting careers input as an integral part of the timetable; ideally as part of an established module.
  • letting the Careers Service know when your students are not available, e.g. reading weeks, placements etc.
  • promoting the Careers Service website to students and encouraging them to use it.
  • maintaining a Careers Service noticeboard in the department advertising the events and services we offer.
  • promoting the Careers Service "What's On" central events programme.
  • maintaining regular contact with the Careers Service.

Your support is essential in helping the Careers Service deliver the best possible service to students. We welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively within your department and are always pleased to discuss your needs and ideas.
