Services to Students
We aim to provide a comprehensive guidance, information and vacancy service for students. Details are provided on our pages for students and graduates but these include:
Advice and information
Advice sessions are available daily for students to talk to Careers Advisers. Initial appointments are for 15 minutes, but students can subsequently access a longer guidance session if appropriate. Students can book an appointment by calling the Careers Service on 0114 222 0910.
Postgraduate Researchers can access specialist help which the Careers Service offers in its partnership with Research and Innovation Services. See our pages for Researchers (available on the left hand menu).
Students and recent graduates who find it difficult to access the Careers Service for information and advice can make use of our online Email Enquiry Service.
Careers Information
Our website has careers pages for students from each academic department, plus case studies of alumni’s careers searchable by department. Our Careers Library has a large collection of material covering: occupations; information on graduate employers; postgraduate study and research; work experience; time out and the application/interview process. Internet access is available for those who wish to search for careers information or make online applications to employers. Our Information Staff also provide a full reference and enquiry service.
Information Resources
The Information Resources pages on our site provide details of the materials held in our Careers Service and links to many useful websites, including careers information for opportunities in other countries.
What's On
Our searchable diary lists details of our careers events for students, postgraduates and recent graduates. These include: Talks and workshops on the main options plus specialist presentations on individual careers; employer-led skills training sessions; presentations by employers and informal interview sessions; and careers and recruitment fairs.
myVacancies
We provide a comprehensive vacancy service to finalists, recent graduates and students seeking work experience. Our Student Jobshop in the Students' Union Building is open 10.00 - 3.00, Monday to Friday (11.00 - 3.00 Tuesday) to help students search for part time and vacation work.
Students receive a weekly email listing forthcoming events and we encourage staff to subscribe to this, too.
Career Management Skills module CAS201
The Careers Service now delivers an undergraduate credit bearing module. This is available to any Level 2 student who has the option within their degree programme to take a 20 credit free elective module in either semester 1 or semester 2. CAS201 develops students’ career management skills, so they can make and implement informed career decisions, both on graduation and beyond.
