Work Experience and Skills Development

Helping your students make the most of their time at university

Employers want to see that students have a range of transferable skills that would benefit their organisation. The Careers Service helps to provide students with work experience opportunities to demonstrate such skills and also provides skills development programmes to help students record and reflect on these skills, all of which are vital for preparing for their graduate careers. Practical experience gained through part-time jobs and work experience can compliment a students’ theoretical knowledge gained through their course making them more attractive to future employers.

myVacancies

Students can make use of myVacancies, the online Careers vacancy service to access a range of opportunities including part-time and vacation work, internships, year-long placements and graduate jobs. Students access the system via the Careers tab in MUSE. As a staff member you also have access to the system so you can keep up to date with relevant vacancies for your students. You will require log-in details which can be obtained from the Student Jobshop (ext: 20940)

Student Jobshop

Students can also make use of the Student Jobshop located in the Students Union. Run by the Careers Service, staff are available to help students in their search for opportunities whilst they study, with useful resources available to take away and the most recent part-time vacancies displayed in the shop window.

Advertising vacancies

Staff can also use our services to advertise internal vacancies suitable for students this could be anything from temporary part-time work to year-long placements.

Degree with Employment Experience

With agreement from their department, students can opt to undertake a year-long placement between their penultimate and final year of study changing their degree to a Degree with Employment Experience.

The Sheffield Graduate Award

Recognises and rewards students for undertaking extra-curricular activities whilst undertaking their course at the University of Sheffield.

The Skills for Work Certificate

Open to all students, this programme enables students to record and reflect on the skills they are developing during their work experience and how they can present these to future employers.

Skills for Success

Run by graduate employers, these skills workshops provide an excellent opportunity for students to practise skills that they will need to succeed in the future, whatever their chosen career.

Taste of Work

Aimed at students with no or very little work experience, Taste of Work offers students a chance to undertake a one-off short (3-4 hour) placement in a real live work place.
