Skills for Success
Skills for Success is a series of skills sessions, run by graduate employers. Sessions cover a wide range of transferable or employability skills, for example, teamworking, negotiation skills, project management, commercial awareness etc and they provide an excellent opportunity for you to practise some of the skills that you will need to succeed in the future, whatever your chosen career.
Sessions take place on campus and usually last for around two hours. They are highly participative – a typical session will involve an introduction by the employer followed by working in a group on a particular task or issue, presenting the results and receiving feedback. You will learn from other participants as well as from the session leader – most students report that they find the sessions useful, interesting and enjoyable. Participation in Skills for Success provides excellent preparation for assessment centres and selection days.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION – please read carefully:
There is a programme of Skills for Success sessions in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 - you can take part in one or more sessions depending on your interests and requirements for skills development. Students who attend 5 or more sessions during the academic year 2012/13 are eligible to receive a Certificate of Attendance – attendance from previous years cannot be carried forward.
Sheffield Graduate Award (SGA)
If you are in your final year and you plan to use your participation in Skills for Success for your Sheffield Graduate Award you MUST ensure that you complete all your sessions before the submission date of your SGA portfolio. Bear in mind that sessions fill up quickly and you may not be able to book all that interest you – and what will you do if a session is cancelled? – you need to think and plan ahead!
Places are limited and are allocated on a first come, first served basis. You will be required to sign in for each session that you attend; if you arrive late, leave early or you do not sign in for any reason your attendance may not be registered. Non-attenders may be excluded from future sessions.
Who can take part in Skills for Success?
Skills for Success sessions are open to current University of Sheffield students in all subjects and all years of study. You are expected to actively contribute to the sessions you attend – employers will provide feedback on your participation - so come along prepared to join in!
