Disability

Many students with a disability progress through school and on to university by developing a variety of coping strategies, or with the minimal amount of technical or personal support. It is common, however, for there to be some concern about how employers will view them as candidates when competing in the graduate employment market and whether in fact, it is necessary or appropriate to inform a potential employer about a specific disability.

How the Careers Service can help

There may be issues you wish to find out more about and give some thought to. Make use of the following websites to help with this.

Information Resources

Search the Equality Issues section in Information Resources which links to the websites of a number of societies and lists material held in our Careers Service, 388 Glossop Road.

Skill

Use Skill, the National Bureau for Students with Disabilities which includes a great deal of information aimed specifically at students and graduates.

What's On

Interested in attending one of our events? The Careers Service recognises the particular needs of students with disabilities and will endeavour to facilitate participation in all events organised. If you have any specific requirements in order to attend any of the talks, workshops, presentations or fairs organised, please let us know in advance and we will make every effort to accommodate these.

Visit the Careers Service

The Careers Service is committed to ensuring that all students have access to its services and facilities. If you feel that there is anything specific that we can do to make it easier for you to use the Service, please let us know. For example, if visual impairment makes it difficult for you to use printed materials in our Service, we can arrange for the relevant information to be provided in alternative formats.

If you wish to discuss your situation with a Careers Adviser, please speak to one of the staff in the Careers Service or call us on 0114 2220910.

In the first instance, bookings are normally made for a fifteen minute initial discussion, but if you feel that your circumstances make this inappropriate please mention this when you first make contact with us. Any information that you provide will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Email Enquiry Service

If you find it difficult to visit the Careers Service, you can make use of our Email enquiry service. Just complete the form, explaining your query as fully as possible.
