For many of you seeking employment, the written application is often the first formal contact you will have with potential employers. It is vital therefore that you adopt a professional and appropriate approach.

CVs

You may need to produce a CV if you are applying for work experience, graduate jobs or further study after your current course. Remember that employers have to sift through a large number of CVs and most will be rejected at the first hurdle, usually because they don't follow the basic rules.

Covering letters

The CV tells the employer what you have done, but not why you believe you are suitable for the job, why you want to work in this area or for this particular organisation. The CV is the product, the covering letter is the marketing.

Interviews

Thorough preparation is essential if you are to arrive at your interview ready to make the most of the opportunity and with enough self-confidence to conquer inevitable interview nerves.

Psychometric tests

Psychometric tests are one measure by which employers can discriminate between individuals in the selection process, so you need to prepare well.

Assessment centres

You may be invited to attend an Assessment Centre, particularly if you are applying for a job with a large employer. Invitations to an Assessment Centre usually follow on from a first successful interview, although this is not always the case.
