The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering is a research-led department, formed in 1996. We have over £7.5M available to support our research from research councils and industrial sponsors. We have state-of-the-art laboratories to support our work along with all the modern IT facilities expected.

An important feature of the research environment in the Department is the interdisciplinary research groups. The focus of our research effort through four groups means that we have been able to build up dedicated high-quality facilities to tackle problems larger than those typically associated with single university researchers.

Our research groups provide the natural home for postgraduate research students; it is in their groups that students find the formal and informal supervision and much of the friendship that makes a research degree such an enriching experience.

We believe that a PhD within our department is an immensely valuable qualification for those aspiring to leadership positions in industry and research.

We also think that the environment we have created makes the Sheffield degree special.

We have openings for well-qualified students of all nationalities and for the very best can offer tuition and support studentships. See the Studentship link on the left for more information.

PhD

Apart from our research training modules in the early part of your studies, you will focus full-time on your research. You need to choose a general area in which to work and a supervisor active in that area.
