Current opportunities for PhD graduate study in CBE.
The department currently has around 85 PhD students. These students are funded mainly by Research Councils, University Scholarships, Industry and from overseas. We are currently seeking applications for studentships in all areas of the department's research interests.
The projects listed indicate their appropriate funding stream and the eligibility associated with each funding stream is detailed below the table. All studentships are expected to commence within the next 12 months.
For the best students we can offer fully funded studentships via Departmental scholarships (DTA in table below). If you do not see a project that appeals to you, feel free to contact our academics directly to develop a project.

Deadlines listed as "open" have no fixed deadline and applications are considered individually.
Deadlines listed as 30th August are projects elligible for departmental scholarhship funding and all application are considered together and ranked.
Funding Stream Details:
- RC (Research Council) - These studentship are funded by a research council grant and will often be restricted to Home and EU students. International applicants are welcome to apply but additional funding will need to found to cover the higher fees associated with international studentships.
- DTA (Doctoral Training Award) - Studentships funded via this route are funded by the department and awarded on a competitive basis. They are generally restricted to Home and EU students only. However, exception international students may apply and will be considered.
- US (University Scholarship) - University scholarships are awarded to the individual applicant on a competitive basis. They are available to Home, EU, and International students. See University Scholarships for more information.
- FW (Fee Waiver / Part Fee Waiver) - The department has, at its discretion, funds which it can offer to facilitate and put towards any application. The level of funding made available will be made on an individual basis and determined by the financial situation of the applicant.
