Process Safety Management &
Loss Prevention.

Continual improvements in safety are necessary in workplaces such as chemical, process and
off-shore plants.

This course integrates risk assessment, safety management systems (SMS) and safety culture showing how they can be assessed and improved. Quantified risk assessments are used as a measure of safety and a tool to reduce; you are also taken through these in the context of the insurance industry to show how risks can affect insurance premiums.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) safety culture assessment tool "climate" is explained and case studies from the onshore and offshore industries are presented to show the impact of improving attitudes to safety at work. You will be taught how to write a Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) safety report to demonstrate SMS systems.

• Risk assessment and land use planning: risks of developing land near a potential major hazard site
• RISKPLOT: hands-on experience in the use of a software tool that can be used to graphically represent the scale of the hazard
• Management measures to prevent major accidents: Major Accident Prevention Policy (MAPP) and Safety Management Systems (SMS)
