Biological Chemistry (MChem)

The biotech revolution has contributed to making Biological Chemistry one of our most popular courses.
  • UCAS Code: C720
  • Type of course: MChem
  • Duration: 4 years
  • Entry requirements: Grades ABB

  • A minimum of GCSE Maths Grade B is required for this course

The symbiosis of Chemistry and Biochemistry underpins research in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical and biochemical industries as well as being an area of intense academic research. Biological Chemistry occurs at the interface of these two disciplines, involving studies of the structures, reactions and interactions of molecules involved in biological processes. The Centre for Chemical Biology in the Chemistry Department provides cutting edge teaching and research in Biological Chemistry. Our partnership with other departments in the Universitly is known as the Krebs Institute, is dedicated to the study of biological molecules using a multidisciplinary approach. Graduates of this course are qualified for careers in either chemistry, or biochemistry, but are especially equipped to work at the interface between these two disciplines.

The first two years of this course concentrate on developing a sound grounding in the theoretical and practical disciplines of both subjects. In the final years the course turns to subject material that is at the forefront of current research in the area. In the fourth year of the MChem programme, a major research project is undertaken.
