PhD Opportunities

The Department of Chemistry has a thriving research school with about 120 students carrying out PhD degrees by research in a range of fields spanning the traditional subdivisions of organic, inorganic, physical and theoretical chemistry, as well as interdisciplinary areas such as chemical biology, materials science and analytical chemistry. The department is housed in the newly refurbished Dainton Building and linked Richard Roberts Building, which won an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2004, and contains state-of-the art laboratory facilities and instrumentation.

The department has been exceptionally successful at attracting funding for its research, having a current grant income of over £10M from EPSRC, as well as substantial grant income from BBSRC, Charities the EU and industrial sponsors. There are approximately 40 new PhD studentships offered every year in the department across a broad range of subject areas, fully funded by EPSRC, BBSRC, charities and industry.

The Funding for PhD studentships provides three basic routes to entry.

DTA Studentships:

These are awarded to the department, by the Research councils, based on its research income. They are available to all staff and therefore cover the widest range of possibilities. These are open to UK students who have been awarded, or expect to get, a first class or an upper second class degree. To apply for these, use the Research cluster pages, via the link below, and contact the supervisor directly for a list of possible projects.

DTC Studentships:

The University has five Doctoral Training Centres. Chemistry is closely allied to the Sheffield Training in Interdisciplinary Energy Research (E-Futures). These studentships are open to UK based students for four years and include a year of taught postgraduate courses.

Research Council or Charity funded Studentships:

These are available to UK or EU students who have been awarded, or expect to get, a first class or an upper second class degree or equivalent. These are funded through a peer review process and are therefore closely related to a specific research project. To apply for these see the PhD opportunities page.

Industrially funded Studentships: The project description under PhD Opportunities will give more information, including the eligibility criteria. These are for specific research project linked to a commercial company and would usually involve close collaboration with the commercial sponsor.
