Buying a Laptop
If you are thinking of buying a laptop you should consider similar things as you would for a desktop PC in terms of specification of components such as the processor, amount of memory, hard disk size and removable storage (DVD/CD) as well as the warranty from the manufacturer/supplier. If you are going to be using the laptop for very intensive graphic applications you should consider purchasing a model that does not use integrated graphics.
In addition you should consider:
- Weight
- How long can it run on the battery with needing recharging
- Do you need wireless/Bluetooth connectivity
- Size of the screen
You may also want to consider a docking station.
Laptops are not supported for use with the Managed Desktop Service.
Apple Macintosh Laptops
There is a separate agreement for the purchase of Apple Mac laptops. Please visit the Apple Mac purchasing pages if you are interested in purchasing an Apple Mac laptop.
Buying Apple Mac Computers and Laptops
PC (Windows or Linux) Laptops
The University has seven contracted suppliers of PC laptop computers. These are shown in the following table.
The suppliers may only supply laptops manufactured by the manufacturer they are contracted to supply.
The purchase of any other manufacturers laptops or use of other suppliers is not permitted unless there is a clear justifiable and auditable reason for this. This is a legal requirement. Simply wanting to choose a different brand is not a sufficient reason as one or more contracted suppliers should be able to offer an equivalent product. If you don't feel the contracted suppliers can provide a product to your requirements you should discuss this with CiCS and procurement.
